05 - Problem Definition

The problem: 92 pages of jibberish to learn, understand and make a decision about. Attacking commercials as a way to inform. Guilt tripping into voting because it's your civic duty. Shamed if you voted wrong. Don't know what you're voting for if you aren't putting in effort.

Why aren't people getting out and voting even though it's our civic duty? Is it the idea that one vote won't make a difference? Is it the shame from peers if you voted differently? Is it that you have no idea who to vote for? You don't even know what's on the ballot?

All of the above.

What can we do to get people to vote? It's not about raising awareness of the lack of voters or getting people to care to vote it's actually getting people to vote.

Uber and Lyft just made a decision to offer discounted or free rides for people to go vote because lack of transportation is a leading reason why people don't vote.

The problem: Recycling is hard to do, requires more money and effort from me. Does it even have an effect if I do it? I don't have the time to think about what is trash and what is recyclable.

It needs to become a habit to recycle, incorporating it into a daily routine and then people won't even second guess it. It needs to become second nature, so how do we do that?

The problem: Mint is the top money management application that only works for individuals. How can it be improved to include couple's finances?

Gap in Financial Literacy Widens for Couples the Longer the Relationship Lasts, Study Suggests

“We argue that people pay attention to what they need to know, when they need to know it,” said lead researcher Adrian F. Ward of UT Austin’s McCombs School of Business, who launched the study to better understand why so many Americans lack money know-how — and why financial education is so ineffective at solving this problem.
